I really do think it's key. Our soil here in Portland is like clay. I add a layer of compost every spring, in an attempt to reach the coveted soft and fluffy dirt that dreams are made of. Ha! Plus, I'm terrible at fertilizing - I forget or get distracted, so the compost is my backup feeding. Also, water, water and more water. I hand water every day in the summer. My husband cringes when the fall water bill comes, after three months of me out with my hose. I figure it all balances out with the gas bill in the winter. :)

The reason I have all the trees in pots is because our yard is tiny and there isn't room to put any more in. I have tons of little conifers in pots. But a forest tree just ain't gonna work on a city lot. So I put them in pots, baby them, and fantasize about a house in the country where they can all be set free. :) The trick to keeping them healthy is to take them out every few years, cut the bottom of the root ball off, then give them new dirt and stick them back down in the same pot. That way, they don't get so root bound that they get sick or die. I have a lot that I need to do this year. It's sort of a pain in the butt, but worth it in the long run.

And now.....I'm off to a plant sale with my mom...happy gardening! :)Mindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07247379600555185331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2733342915429018771.post-21559860815958387022014-04-17T15:52:34.434-07:002014-04-17T15:52:34.434-07:00I am so jealous right now.....Spring in Ohio is no...I am so jealous right now.....Spring in Ohio is nothing like it is at your house. A few of my crocuses bloomed, one daffodil flower so far.....& my irises are poking out. I want to live where you do, let me know when there is a house for sale on your street!? lol One other thing, we both started planting flowers in our new yards around the same time......yet while mine are full and getting fuller each year, they are not as big as yours. Is it all about the difference of where we live? Or do you have a secret? I see you said you use compost. So is that what you cover all over your beds, no mulch? I am starting to think I better start using compost too :) And one more question (sorry, I can talk gardening all day) I see you have some trees in pots? Why is this? Looks like they do good? If so I might just do that too!!
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17652832782164271871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2733342915429018771.post-43331467693383533732014-04-16T21:12:52.421-07:002014-04-16T21:12:52.421-07:00Oh yeah, I totally envy the rhodie.
