The Driveway: 4/12/16

Nothing too exciting in the food zone yet, but I had to take pics of the Clematis 'Early Sensation' I have growing on the garage, in all its glory.

It's in a pot and I just have some square wire nailed up for it to climb on.
It's supposed to be evergreen, but the first year it died all the way back, and I had to whack it to the base.
This winter it fared much better, so hopefully it can make it up and over the top of the garage door.

Other than the bulbs, I got all the plants that were in holding, rehomed in the yard, so the trough is lookin' pretty bare in the interim.
I did plant a handful of my runner bean starts in the neighbor's donated area and they're already bigger than the peas I stuck in two months ago.
They're comin' along, though.

I still can't figure out what the plant is in the center of the pot.
It looks like a Crocosmia, but I can't imagine why I would have stuck one in there.
I also have another mystery plant coming up, that maybe you can help identify.
It looks like a potato to me, but again, why in the heck would potatoes be in there?

Whadya think?

Over in the biggest container, last year's chard is really filling in, as well as what I think is elephant garlic.
Our old neighbors left the pot of it behind when they moved last spring, and I thought it was leeks at first, but the bigger they got, it was clear they weren't leeks.
When the foliage started to wane, I pulled one and found what I thought was an onion, so I pulled them all and cut off the greens.
I hauled them all in the house and it was then that I realized I had made a mistake.  The looked like onions, but without the layers.
I asked at our farmer's market and one of the growers said it sounded like elephant garlic that hadn't segmented yet.  He suggested replanting and waiting until the following year.
So that's what I did.
They definitely regrew, so we shall see.

The neighbor shared what she said was kale starts, but it sure does look like broccoli to me.
But what do I know.
You can just barely see the regular garlic coming up behind it.
I stuck that in in February, I think.

And last, the lettuce seed that I sprinkled in is up far enough to tell what it is now.

So cute.
And that's it for the driveway this week.
Anyone going to the Leach sale tomorrow?  I've been the last four years and always get there before the doors open at 9:00, but the kids have a game and have to be at the ballpark at 10:00, so I'm not sure how I'm gonna manage that.
The struggle is real, people.
The struggle is real.
Have a great weekend!

  1. We compost, and a few years ago I noticed something in one of my pots. It was a potato. Apparently it got its start in the compost, and when I used some of that compost in my pot, it took hold!! Just a thought if you compost. :-)

  2. Oh, I hope your clematis does make it up over the garage. It's a beauty.
