DIY Upholstered Piano Bench

This was another one of my DIY Christmas gifts that I just didn't get around to posting.  I had an idea of what I wanted to do, so when I walked into Goodwill and saw this bench sitting there with a $12 price tag, I snagged it with the quickness.

So it started out life looking like this:

I went over everything with a sanding block to rough it up, then primed.
It looks grey in the photos, but I used white, rattle can primer.

It was about 6 degrees outside, so I brought it in the house for painting.
I used interior trim paint that we already had.

Next, I drilled holes in the top so I could put buttons in the seat cushion.

I had foam in my stash that I cut to fit the top.
I didn't have a whole piece big enough, so I pieced together two.
I knew once the batting and fabric were on, the seam wouldn't show.

I was going to use spray adhesive to attach the foam to the top, but I must have used the last of it on another project, 'cause I never found the dang can.
The Dad saved the day and brought in a role of double-sided tape that they use to install rubber flooring in fitness centers.

That foam ain't goin' nowhere with that stuff.

Next up was batting, then fabric over the top of that.

Make sure you remember where your hinges go.  :)

I had some leftover fabric, so I made a pillow with it.

Now, remember those holes I drilled for buttons?
Yeah, turns out I don't have an upholstery needle.
So my sister got it without 'em.
With the promise that I'll put 'em on one of these days.  :)

Here's some shots of the finished product,
without the Christmas-y background.

Cute, no?

Have no idea why that happened, but glad I get to see them now. I love this piano bench makeover--love the fabric you chose. And Oberlin has a really good music dept.
