So Long, Sucka

Oh happy day, oh happy day.....

Remember the neighbor's tree that I only ever barely mentioned for fear of launching into a cussing spree?  Ding dong, the witch is dead, the wicked witch, the wicked witch, ding dong the wicked witch is deeeeeead.

I will not go into the details of its existence, or its demise, but I shall show you where it lived and how it died.  It was a peaceful death.  If you call being hacked to pieces with a chainsaw peaceful.

Now, in general, I'm not a fan of taking out trees if it isn't necessary.  I worried for weeks over critter homes I'd be destroying. Thankfully, there was only one bird and one squirrel nest found. But this sucker had to go.  It was the biggest, nastiest, mess for twelve months out of the year.  We hadn't used our patio in two years because of the aphid infestation every summer.  Sickening. And the amount of needles I swept up on a weekly basis for the last, however many years, could fill the grand canyon.  I'm still finding them in the house from being tracked in.  Aggggghhhhh - I hated that $%@!&*^ thing.

These pictures aren't fantastic - it was raining when I remembered to run out with my camera - but you'll get the idea.

Had it been planted 20 feet in the other direction, it would have been great.
Five feet from the property line, notsomuch.
So here's where we're at now.

There was a wee bit of a casualty with our fence, but it'll be an easy fix.

That, my friends, was a big ass tree.
And although the view didn't improve much from a standing position, ahem, when I'm sitting on the patio or deck, this is what I see now.

Ahhhhh.
Can you hear my sigh of relief to not have to deal with that thing ever again?
We took it out two weekends ago and I've already got my patio set up like the good old days.
Yeehaw!

  2. I never noticed that beast before in your photos! Holy cow is that an insane tree which I might add really hovered on your property!!! How did you cut down your neighbors tree??? Did they move out and you all jumped the fence! HA! I am so happy for you....don't even get me started on our tree situation! Love that view now!!!

  3. Yes, I'm not fond of tree removal either but sometimes it's a matter of "wrong plant--wrong place" and they gotta go. It looks like it was a Doug fir and whoever the idiot was who decided Doug firs are neighborhood trees needs to be fired. They belong in the forest not 5 feet from the house. Congrats on your new and improved view!

  5. Glad that it's gone and your view has improved. That was a humungous tree--I always wonder what people were thinking when I see where trees get planted sometimes. When we first moved into our place, there was a big old vine maple in the backyard, just a scrubby tree that should never have been allowed to grow there, and me being me, I decided that I needed to expand my gardening spaces, so I proceeded to dig up all in and around the tree roots. Fast forward 3-4 years later, and I had basically killed the tree. Then we had to get it gone, with no road access where it was, and also right on the fenceline with the neighbor, with their car parked very near it. Our other neighbors took pity on us, and one of them actually scaled the damn tree in a harness and with a chainsaw, and we were all on the ground pulling on ropes trying to get all the pieces to fall in the right direction--what a mess. But, it opened up a lot of room and daylight back there, so I guess it all worked out! And we ended up with tons of firewood.
