Sloppy Buffalo Joes

"Sloppy Joes, slop, sloppy joes...."  Please tell me you've seen the lunch lady skit on SNL with Adam Sandler.

This dinner was even better than I thought it would be.  I had ripped the recipe out of our paper, thinking it would be something The Dad would really like, and then I ended up loving it.  Delicious. And easy.  And delicious.  Oh, did I say that already?

The original recipe feeds 8, so I cut it in half.  I didn't figure the kids would be on board, so they got grilled cheese instead.  The half recipe was enough for The Dad and I - so I'm not sure how you could get 8 servings out of twice that.  Or maybe we're just pigs.

Here's the recipe with my notes:

Sloppy Buffalo Joes
Feeds 2 hungry adults + leftovers for lunch
Printable Recipe

1 Tbsp olive oil
1 pound lean ground turkey
2 carrots, peeled and chopped, divided
2 celery stalks, chopped, divided
1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced or finely chopped
Salt and pepper
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp packed brown sugar
1/2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/8 - 1/4 C hot sauce (I used Frank's)
1/2 C tomato sauce
1/2 C chicken broth
4 burger rolls, split and toasted (I used 4 slider buns)
1 C blue cheese crumbles (I subbed blue cheese salad dressing)
2 large dill pickles, chopped (I omitted these)

Heat a large skillet with the olive oil over medium-high heat.  Add the turkey and break it up, then saute for 5 to 6 minutes.  Drain and return to pan.  Cook an additional 5 minutes, or until it's starting to brown.  Add the onion and garlic.  Add the celery and carrots, leaving out enough for garnish.  Season with salt and pepper, then cook for 7 to 8 minutes.

In a bowl, combine the vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, tomato sauce, and broth.  Add to turkey mixture, stir to combine and simmer a few minutes more.

Pile the filling onto the toasted buns and top with blue cheese crumbles (or dressing),  remaining chopped carrot, celery, and pickles, if using.

Here's dinner on my plate:

So stinkin' yummy.

Are you listening to Christmas music yet?
I might be.
Maybe.
Okay, I am.

  1. Listening to Christmas music? Heck, I've had the house decorated for Christmas for almost 2 weeks now...

I love this sloppy joe idea because I'm not a big fan of the tomato-y normal sloppy joes and I LOVE buffalo wing sauce. It's like a personal sloppy joe made just to my specifications, so thanks

  2. I have a strict rule about no Christmas music or movies until after Thanksgiving. I absolutely hate the way the stores and tv rush the seasons. So there...

Love how you modify recipes to your liking and how cool that you have a printable version!

  3. These look really good! My husband loves sloppy joes and this would be a fun way to make them differently.

I usually wait to listen to christmas music until after thanksgiving but there is a song I wanted the kids to listen to called 'soul cake' that really fits into the thanksgiving season. And the rest of it is more winter themed music than christmas music. So it works well on a rainy day.

  5. I don't like the retail side of it either. When Christmas stuff is coming out before Halloween it makes me want to scream.
