Estate Sale Scores

Anyone out there with a blog who has a backlog of posts in their head that they'll never in a zillion years get to?  This is one that I planned on doing and just never got to it.  Till now.

Last month, my mom called to tell me that a house across the street from her was having an estate sale.  The same people had lived there since I was a kid, so I was excited to see the inside.  And I'm pretty sure she was hyperventilating while she was telling me about what they were selling.  She had already been through once.  I couldn't make it that day - I was knee deep in royal icing ladybugs - but I headed over the next morning.

This place was like walking into a craft store.  They had everything you could possibly imagine to make anything you could possibly dream of.  Beads, paints, yarns, stamps...the list goes on.  And on.  And on.  I'm not kiddin', I've never seen anything like it.  Ya know those rolling plastic organizing things with drawers?  Zillions of them.  In all different sizes.  My mom bought several of those.

I only had $20 cash, so I couldn't go too crazy.  But it WAS half price day.  :o)  This is what I bought:

A glass barn-shaped greenhouse.
It's on my kitchen counter with an African violet under it.

A bag full of wooden knobs.

A bag of mini wooden flower pots.

Another bag of wooden odds and ends.

Wood finials.

Two spools of tulle.

A big bottle of red acrylic paint.

Cording.

Okay, so most of those things I had NO idea what I was going to do with them when I bought them, but I ended up using the red paint on a lot of the ladybug party stuff.
And I'm almost finished with a Christmas present that I made using one of the other things.
I'll post it soon.

I also got four gallon-sized ziplock bags FULL of cookie cutters and molds, and a plastic divided storage container for organizing the mini ones.
All shapes, all sizes, all super awesome.

Anyone like to take a guess at my grand total?
I'll wait while you add it up in your head......

Ready for it?
THREE DOLLARS.
That's right, I said $3.
For all of it.

Now are you ready for the piece de resistance?
You're gonna pee yourself.
No really, you may want to take a potty break before you scroll down.
I knew I had to have it the second I saw it.
I didn't care how much it was.
Scroll down for the cutest dang thing you've ever seen in your life.

It's a vintage crib people.
And it's small.
And it will fit pretty much anywhere.
Which is good considering the fact I was pretty sure The Baby would be sleeping in a drawer.
It will need to be sanded down (I'm putting The Dad in charge of that) and repainted.
I haven't decided yet if I want to do white or a fun color.
It will depend on where it ends up.
We're also going to put a new sheet of stronger plywood in the bottom and buy new foam.
I love it.
It's going to be sooooo cute!!!!
Okay, time to guess the dollar amount again.
Did you take that pee break yet?
TWELVE DOLLARS.
Did you hear me?
$12 DOLLARS!!!
I know.  It's crazy and insane.  And totally awesome.

Okay, so that concludes my super duper awesome Estate Sale day last month.
Keep your eye out for that Christmas present I made with one of the random bags.
And the crib progress.  :o)

Butternut Squash Ravioli with Brown Butter & Sage

For those of you have kids, do you remember that stage of pregnancy when there were moments you'd swear you could fall asleep standing up?  I remember when I was pregnant with The Kid, there were a few days when I was sitting at my desk at work, using every ounce of strength I had not to fall asleep.  It's a feeling you can't explain, but if you've been there, you remember it.  It's almost uncontrollable.  Like what I imagine narcolepsy to be.  The point is, the last three days have involved that feeling.  That tiredness that is like no other tiredness you've ever felt.  It hit me shortly before I needed to head to the kitchen to start dinner tonight.  Perfect.  Needless to say, dinner was super easy and super quick.  But it was insanely good.  In fact, I had a nearly identical meal at my sister's just recently.  I wanted it again it was so dang good.

I had some fresh butternut squash ravioli from Costco.  I've eaten a lot of butternut squash ravioli in my life, but somethin' about these is so good.  They're almost sweet.  If you've been eyeballin' 'em, pick yourself up a package.  The downside is, the kids don't care for them.  Well, good for me, 'cause I get more to myself.  But I cooked up some regular noodles for them first, otherwise dinner would have been done even faster 'cause these only take about 4 minutes.

For the "sauce", I put a some butter in a saucepan and browned it.  While it was browning, I threw in some whole sage leaves and fried them up in it.  They get crispy and delicious.  That's it.  A drizzle of some good balsamic and a sprinkle of parm and you've got yourself dinner.

I made a salad with spinach, pears, dried cranberries, candied walnuts and shaved Parmesan.  I used a poppyseed dressing I had in the fridge.  The salad was A-mazing, too.

A loaf of yummy, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside bread completed the meal.

Here's tonight's dinner:

Yeah, that was a really good dinner.
Now, I think I'm gonna go find that spot on the couch....

Driving Test & A Silly Kid Breakfast

Okay, so those two things normally have nothing in common, but today I kinda meshed them together.

I didn't feel great last night, so instead of preparing The Kid's fun lunch for school, I became one with the couch and the remote.  Then, this morning, I was racing around trying to get ready to take The Kid to school and my driving test.  I decided to do a quick fun breakfast and just skip our usual Friday fun lunch altogether.  I had cars on the mind, so that's what I went with.  Car shaped pancakes.  I just used my cutters on the griddle pan and cut circles out of fruit leather for the wheels.  Mandarin orange wedges around the rim.  I gave them each a small dish of syrup for dunking.  I also made some mini blueberry pancake circles that they also dunked.

Here's breakfast:

Not fancy, but not bad for 6:30 am.  And as it turned out, The Kid stayed home from school anyway.  He hasn't been feeling well the last couple days, so we decided it would probably be best for him to just stay home, rather than the school trying to call me to come get him when I was at the DMV.

Part two of the story - I took my driving test this morning and passed with flying colors.  Wahoo!  I am SO GLAD that's done!  So tomorrow, after 23 days of being without a car, I can finally go pick up a rental.  And hopefully get this insurance crud dealt with soon so we can FINALLY figure out a new car.  I recommend not EVER getting in an accident that totals your car.  It's a headache to the umpteenth power.

I'd throw in our dinner pictures now, but that would be even more random, so I'll do it in another post.  Back in a few......
