The Backyard: 5/19/15

Okey dokey artichokies, we're headin' out back for the last post of the week.

I'll start with the Christophii Allium that my mom got me for Mother's Day last year.
I was so happy to see it come up this spring.

I took way too many pictures of my little maples on the deck.
I can't help it, I love them.

The tree rose smells soooo good right now.

Remember the Brugmansia that I attempted to overwinter in the garage, without a drip of water?
The one I've been affectionately calling The Stick?
Well looky here.

Now if I can keep the bugs off it, we'll be in business.

This is where I stuck the other three lilies from The Dad.

I thought one of you was coming to deadhead the neighbor's rhody for me?

Back in that corner, the little pink rose buds are opening.

One iris bloomed back here this year.
I suck at iris.

I remembered early this spring that I had bought an Astrantia last year, but couldn't for the life of me remember where I planted it.
I found him.  :)

I need more dark foliage in my life.
I moved my little potted maple into the bed for the time being.

A few pulled back shots.

From the other end.

As you can see, the little bench is still under the tree.

This is my Mother's Day pot from my mom.
Isn't  it purdy?

The Meadow Rue seems to be happy in the new bed.

I thought this sage was dead.
Apparently he changed his mind.

Same story with this Jacob's Ladder.
It was so big and pretty the last couple of years.
Not so much this year.

The new growth on Maddie's Hellebore is really pretty.

This is my favorite Hosta in the yard right now.

And last, the backside of the tree is really filling in.
I'm diggin' all the foliage color variation.
Now I just need the impatiens and fuchsias to take off.

Don't alert the officials, I cleaned out the murky birdbath after taking the pictures.  :)

And that's it for the yard this week.
Tomorrow morning, my mom and I are getting in the car and heading south on a nursery trek, with Grace as our guide.
I might be a wee bit excited.
I told The Dad to get the bank roll ready.
He asked, only half kidding, if $30 was enough.
Poor, poor naive soul.
Have a great holiday weekend!

  1. LOL- Did you tell him $30 would be enough for lunch? lol OH-they have NO idea how much plants cost, do they?

Your gardens are just spectacular. I don't know what that rusty old piece is (it looks like a press of some kind) but I love how it looks in your garden. xo Diana

  3. Oooh, I'm so excited for your visit tomorrow!! Your hubby is sweet and I'm chuckling. Just remind him that you don't wear designer gowns and visit the spa every week. He's money ahead. :) Love everything in your garden. I'm especially impressed with that hellebore foliage. Wowza!

  6. Where do I start!?!
I love the collection of potted plants on your table! Your clay pots are aged and so full of character. Just the way I like them!
The big photo shot of your yard is amazing! You have quite the sanctuary behind your house. Wow!
And your Hosta is sooooo beautiful! I ventured south to an amazing nursery in San Juan Capistrano in search of some . . . and hit the jackpot. I can't wait to see if they can survive in my backyard and in this dry CA weather.
I hope you're having a wonderful Memorial weekend!

  7. I can't figure out how you would suck at growing irises. You can grow anything, I am sure of it. My whole front yard is full of blooming irises right now. I just got a knock out rose tree and I don't think it smells at all 😭. What is the the Bush with white blooms on it behind your lillies? I was just trying to figure out the other day....how much I spend on flowers each season. do you have any idea how much you spend in one season? does it even matter.......no such thing as too much money on gardening. Lol.
