The Front Yard: 9/23/15

I figured I'd give ya a break from the people posts and throw in some plants.  I still have a backlog of yard photos from early this month, but I went out this morning to take some current ones.

A lot of plants are showing their age, but there are some that have no clue that we're entering into fall.
The Black Eyed Susan vine is blooming better than it has all summer.

The 'Vanilla' Marigolds are still going strong, too.

I found a surprise on the Persicaria that I've grown to love this year.

The bed up against the house is going gangbusters with the Cleome and annual Salvia, and the Pineapple Sage is just now pushing out buds.  I almost like them better than the flowers themselves.

The 'Blue Bell' Dahlia is covered in flowers.

The volunteer Verbena is everywhere.

A pulled back shot.

The Tina Rose is beautiful right now.

Mixed in with the rose, Cleome, Zinnias, and Verbena, one of my favorite Dahlias is finally blooming.
I've had it for probably five years, but it hasn't bloomed the last three.
I have no clue why.
It was in full sun, in the same bed, but I moved it over a few feet this spring, just to see what would happen.
Apparently that's all it wanted.
This one is called 'Curly Q.'

It's a true pink, and when it first starts to bloom, it looks like a regular Dahlia.
As it ages, the petals start getting curly.

Here are some shots of the bed up against the front porch.

I love the new growth on this Euphorbia.

I grew this plant for the first time last year, in a pot, and loved it, so I stuck two in the ground this year.
It's just now getting buds.
Velvet Elvis.

African Daisy.

Just outside the fence, the plug Honeysuckle that I planted, to replace the horrid climbing red rose, is really taking off.

The front strip has filled in a ton, with creeping plants and lots of volunteers.

This little yellow Corydalis pops up in random places and I kinda love it.

This Dahlia's home has gradually become more shaded, but he's still puttin' out blooms on the sidewalk side.

Here's 'Curly Q' again, from outside the fence.

A quick shot of the driveway, and the purple bean that has OUTDONE itself.
A friend gave me a start of a mystery green bean, so I don't know the variety, but this one plant could have fed the whole block.
And it's still going.
I'm definitely gonna try to save some to start next year.

Down in the parking strip, it's lookin' pretty haggard, but my Chocolate Cosmo that overwintered is just now blooming.

And last, a Cuphea that I stuck in down there is still looking good.

So that's what the end of September looks like out front.
I'll share some backyard photos in my next post.

  1. You have a lot of my favorite plants in bloom right now. Your velvet elvis is so cool and I love the blacked eyed susan too. The dahlias are stunning. Were the purple beans tasty? That is so cool it did so well in a container.

  2. LOVE the yellow flowers in your garden! They remind me of Fall!
We planted purple beans last Summer. They're so pretty! My kids didn't eat them, but I did :0)
As always, your garden is just beautiful!
    Have a great weekend!

  3. My garden mostly just looks tired - and I certainly am tired - I think our long HOT summer really wore on me. I am ready to put things to bed and be done with it. You however continue to inspire me!

  4. Curly Q is just gorgeous! My vanilla marigolds are so horrible looking right now. Nothing like yours that's for sure. I think they got hit with a disease or slugs. The African daisy....is that a Bush? My aunt gave me a piece of what she calls a daisy Bush. It still has not bloomed for me yet, but just the other day I saw it had some buds on it.
