The End Of August In The Front Yard

It's hard to believe we're only about a month away from no more yard posts.  This is the time of year when I'm picking apart the yard and making notes of everything I want to do differently next year.  And telling myself not to forget the areas and plants that really worked.  I have a garden journal - I need to be better about using it.

The best thing I did this year was taking out those Rhododendrons up against the front of the house.  After talking about it for years, I'm sooooo glad I finally did it.  And I'm really happy with the way the one end filled in, even with everything being last minute annuals.

The Wooly Lamb's Ear and Japanese Holly were the only things left after the masacre.

I've had the Pineapple Sage overwinter for me in the past, so maybe I'll get lucky and it'll come back next year.
If not, it's a cheap price to pay for its awesomeness.

My second favorite thing is the new window box.
Again, it's something I had been talking about doing for years.

I got it planted late, so it didn't get as big and full as it could have, but it's still pretty, and it'll be fun to pick out plants for it next spring.

And can we just make note of the fact that, not only did I keep two Sweet Potato Vines alive, but they're also blooming.

I had never grown the pink Scaveola before, but I really like it and hope to find some again next year.

Redoing the path through the main garden area out front made a big difference.
It looks so much cleaner and tidier.
It was a lot of work, but it was free.
And it gave me a few extra inches of empty dirt.  :)
This Penstemon is right along the edge, and has been there for three years now.
The Coleus I put next to it pops and helps show off the purple flowers better.

I've never had Coleus do much for me, but this year worked out.
The ones in pots did the best.

My mom gave me this Dahlia years ago and it comes back and blooms without fail.
It's up against the front fence, and spills through the slats.

Is it obvious that I like taking pictures of Dahlias?

And last, I bought a couple of these Hibiscus trionum 'Simply Love' plants last year.
They reseeded like crazy and I had a mat of volunteers this spring.
I moved them all around the yard, and stuck some in the old sink with the hot peppers.
It makes for a good filler.

And that's it for this post.
I've got an update of all our driveway veggies, as well as backyard and parking strip photos from the end of August, coming soon.

Shameless plug alert:
Just a little reminder that you can purchase my floral photographs in my Etsy shop.
If you see one in a post that isn't in the shop, shoot me an email and I'd be more than happy to list it for ya.

  4. The window box really accents the house. I'll bet you have no weeds in your garden because of the dense planting. That's the way to go! Lovely, as always!

  5. Mindy, what you do in your garden is such an art. It's literally a giant masterpiece that I'm so jealous of because I can't keep even the dinkiest pot of flowers alive through a summer. I love the window box and that dahlia is amazing!

  6. Wow! Your front lawn looks so gorgeous, as usual. Though the true fall colors aren't set in yet, the colorful blooms with all those pinks are as just lovely under the early fall sun. I particularly love the zinnia! That pottery is a lovely addition to the yard. Thanks so much for always sharing the loveliest pictures and close ups! I hope you're doing well!
