Brugmansia 8/11/15

If ya missed the story behind this guy, I'll give a little recap.  I bought him last summer at Means nursery for $1.99.  A dollar ninety nine!!!!  He was big and loaded with buds.  I bought one for my mom at the same time.  Wanting to attempt to winter him over, I stuck him in the garage.  And then I ignored him.  All. Winter.  Long.  My mom, on the other hand, put hers in the garage, and actually gave him water throughout winter.  What a concept.  Anyway, spring came and hers had new growth coming. Mine was affectionately dubbed, The Stick.  You may remember photos from my spring posts.  I drug him out to the yard anyway, not expecting much.  I watered him.  Talked to him.  Apologized for the neglect.  Then, one day, a teensy bit of something, that could possibly be green, started to emerge on The Stick.  Fast forward several months, and The Stick can now be called, The Big Beautiful Blooming Beast.

You guys, he's soooo pretty.
And he smells amazing at night.
It was The Dad, who said something a couple nights ago when we were out on the deck, that discovered the night fragrance.
He asked what smelled so flowery.  I had no idea, so I walked around sniffing.
It's this guy.

Here he is, hangin' out with his friends.

You get a sneak peek of the new outdoor coffee table The Dad built me in this next photo.

Isn't he purdy?
I promise to take better care of him this winter.

  1. Actually, from what I've read, the care you gave him for the winter is the standard, recommended way to overwinter Brugs. I've done it both ways, and neither seems to make a difference. They are water hogs once they get going though. I adore my Brugs.

  2. I love it! I think your back deck and sitting area is just adorable. All those flowers! Everything looks so green and beautiful. It doesn't look like your garden season is coming to an end at all.

  4. Well, he sure doesn't hold a grudge, does he? I love the soft yellow color too. It looks so elegant in your outdoor room. Don't you love it when a bargain plant outdoes itself?

  5. Not to bad for $1.99 and a whole bunch of neglect! "The Stick" is very purdy indeed!

  6. Well you must be doing something right. I gave mine (a rescue) similar treatment (aka neglect) over the winter, and have been watering quite generously since bringing him outside. But, for all intents and purposes, he still is mostly a stick - with a tuft of green up top. Not quite sure what to do - I'll give him another year to prove himself. I'll tell him I want him to look like yours.

    1. Ha! Someone said the other day that they want LOTS of fertilizer. It's worth a shot anyway.
