The Backyard: 3/20/16

Not much new here since my last post, but I wanted to take some pictures of my babies in their new homes.  And, ya know, while I was out there....

I might be a wee bit obsessed with this Barberry/Persicaria combo right now.

Grace had a picture of one in her last post, and since I got the start from her, I'll make an educated guess and say this one is Persicaria runcinata 'Purple Fantasy.'
The Barberry is 'Gold Nugget.'

I stole a piece of this Lungwort from my sister's yard last year.

My mystery plant's buds opened, but apparently they close back up at night.
I guess I need to make an afternoon run with my camera to get a picture.

I love the new growth on all the Clematis.
'Belle of Woking' was new to me last year and she has buds.

I've been filling in the area where the Butterfly Bush met its demise last summer.
After the huge rain and windstorm nearly took it completely out, I decided it was a sign.
It had to go.
In addition to moving a few things from other parts of the yard, I put my new 'Season's King' Heuchera in there.

All my other new shady babies went under the big tree.

It looks pretty bare right now, but there are several Hostas that are barely up, and they practically take over.
I forgot to take pictures of the new Toad Lily, but he's in there.

So here's the Eared Lady Fern, aka Athyrium otophorum 'Okanum.'

The Arching Japanese Holly Fern, aka, Cyrtomium fortunei var. Clivicola.

Japanese Forest Grass, aka, Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola.'

Meadow Rue, aka, Thalictrum with no tag.  :(

This Persicaria was added last year.
I believe it's 'Red Dragon.'

Can I also point out the reseeding nature of Wild Impatiens?
I've had the same variety for years and years, but I got a new one from Grace last spring.
They're dueling for a complete takeover.
I really don't mind 'cause I love them.
And luckily, they're easy to pull.

Definitely prolific little suckers.

And finally, I stuck my new ground cover, Herniaria glabra 'Sea Foam', in the path that leads to the wall behind the main bed.
I put the path in years ago for the kids and The Dog, since they were tromping through there anyway.
The wall is kind of their secret hideaway, especially in summer when the plants camouflage it.

I also moved my birdbath planter over to that area.

That grey thing was in the big deck planter last summer and I hated it there.
There were two, and since they both overwintered, I figured I'd try them in the ground before getting rid of them.

The peony that was here when I bought the house is up and at 'em.
More Lesser Celandine, of course.  A Tri-Color Sage is in there, attempting to survive the choking.

And I think that's it for now.
We're home from our Easter trip to the Rock Farm, so photos of that will inevitably show up before the week's over.
And my fingers and toes are crossed for the sunshine that's supposedly in our forecast this week.
I've had a enough rain for a day or two, thank you very much.
Two dry days this month.
Two.
Off to see what's new outside in the dirt.....

  1. I told the kids that if March comes in like a lion, then it will go out like a lamb. It took all damn month for the lamb to show up! I'm excited to see your new clematis in bloom. I just brought home betty corning and a gorgeous one called blue dancer. And I'll be out planting all week :) Your garden is looking great!

  2. That Thalictrum is Thalictrum ichangense, it stays short and behaves a lot like Epimedium, unlike most Thalictrums, which have very tall flower stalks. Great shots of the barberry/Persicaria combo. I need a few more barberries.

  3. I love all of the lemony-lime colors going on in your garden, Mindy! Our tiered fountain broke from the harsh winter this year and I told my husband that I wanted to convert it into a planter . . . so glad to see that you did the same with your birdbath so I can show him an example of what I mean. Love it! Happy Spring and Happy Gardening!
